PBA slaps ₱10k fine, 1-game suspension on Calvin Abueva for ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’
Calvin Abueva has been slapped by the PBA with a ₱10,000 fine together with a 1-game suspension following his ejection in Magnolia’s 89-84 win over Manila Clasico rival Brgy. Ginebra last Sunday at the Mall or Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Commissioner’s Office explained that “The Beast” was penalized for his ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’ in the said match wherein he was ejected after picking up two technical fouls, the second one coming during the 9:15 mark of the payoff period due an altercation with Gin Kings guard Nards Pinto.
The league added that Abueva has already been been issued a warning last season and that repetition of the same offense would merit a suspension.
The 2nd overall pick of the 2012 rookie draft, who’s had a long history of transgressions with the league ever since his days with the Alaska Aces, will serve out the suspension during the Hotshots’ match against the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters set on Friday, June 22 at the same venue.
Abueva became a hot topic on social media after reporters overheard him saying “Japan, Japan. Bye PBA.” as he was on his way out of the venue after the election.
In an apparent challenge to the league, Abueva posted an IG story threatening to leave the team if anybody can prove through video that he was indeed guilty of the second technical foul. The post has since been deleted.
The former San Sebastian star posted averages of 16.0 points and 12.3 rebounds in Magnolia’s first three outings including a 23-point, 12-rebound effort against NorthPort. He, however, struggled mightily against San Miguel and Brgy. Ginebra only managing to produce 6.5 points and 7.0 boards.
