Adrian Wong breakout game powers Magnolia to 20-point rout of Phoenix

Adrian Wong drained 6 three-pointers out of 7 attempts to power league-leading Magnolia over Phoenix Super LPG, 103-83, Saturday night in the 2021 PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

The 25-year old former Ateneo standout, who was plucked out of free agency by the Hotshots during the break after being released by Rain or Shine, finished with 18 points in 28 minutes of action as the Chito Victolero-mentored squad remained unbeaten in 6 starts.

Wong’s significant contribution came at the most opportune time since the team is still missing the services of Rome dela Rosa and Calvin Abueva. Both forwards will need a couple of weeks more to recover from their injuries.

“That’s that we talked about, the next man up. ‘Yung bata naman talaga, meron ‘yan eh. We asked him to play defense. We asked him to guard the best player in the other side. And he did a good job. Bonus na lang ‘yung he contributed a lot on offense,” said Victolero during the post-game presser.

Mike Harris led the 2018 Governors’ Cup champs with a double-double of 20 points and 13 boards while Paul Lee and Mark Barroca chipped in 14 and 13 markers, respectively.

Russel Escoto also made a rousing debut as the former Terrafirma and San Miguel big man scored 9 points in 5 minutes of action.

The Hotshots take a 4-day break and will go for win number 7 on Thursday, February 24 against NorthPort Batang Pier.
