Rain or Shine def Magnolia, 109-105 [PBA S49 Govs’ Cup QF Game 1 | Sep. 25, 2024]

Rain or Shine and Magnolia are set to clash in a playoff matchup for the first time in years, and anticipation is high for what promises to be a fiercely contested duel. Unlike previous quarterfinals, neither team enters this matchup with any discernible advantage.
Forget that Rain or Shine was the top qualifier from Group B and Magnolia the fourth seed from Group A; there’s no twice-to-beat incentive for the higher-seeded squad this time around.
This best-of-five series features the Elasto Painters and the Hotshots vying for a crucial head start in their side of the PBA Governors Cup quarterfinals at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium this Wednesday.
Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m., marking the first postseason encounter between these two teams since Magnolia cleanly swept Rain or Shine in their best-of-three showdown during the 2021 Philippine Cup quarterfinals.
However, the Elasto Painters have transformed into a formidable unit, bolstered by the addition of Gian Mamuyac, Shaun Ildefonso, Jhonard Clarito, Keith Datu, Adrian Nocum, Caelan Tiongson, and Felix Lemetti. Under the dynamic leadership of coach Yeng Guiao, they have adopted a spirited and relentless style of play.
Adding to their arsenal is import Aaron Fuller, who has seamlessly integrated into the team, evidenced by their impressive performance in Group B during the eliminations.
This synergy could serve the Elasto Painters well as they face a Magnolia team grappling with health concerns and chemistry issues surrounding their new import, Rayvonte Rice.
Stepping in for Shabazz Muhammad, Rice struggled in his debut, posting a disappointing 2-of-14 shooting performance along with seven rebounds in 27 minutes of play last Sunday.
The Hotshots suffered a narrow 82-89 defeat in that game, where coach Chito Victolero opted to rest his key players in preparation for the playoffs, setting the stage for what could be a thrilling showdown.
