Magnolia def Terrafirma, 99-98 [PBA S49 Govs’ Cup | Sep. 12, 2024]

Reports indicate that Shabazz Muhammad has received the green light to play for Magnolia, making him eligible to take the court once again, starting with the Hotshots’ clash against the Terrafirma Dyip this Thursday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

With the crisis averted, the Hotshots aim to reclaim their footing, looking to surpass the .500 mark as they face off against the struggling Dyip in a 7:30 p.m. matchup.

Previously, due to Muhammad lacking the necessary FIBA clearance, the Hotshots had no choice but to field an all-Filipino lineup, resulting in a disappointing 74-82 defeat to the Meralco Bolts during their PBA Governors’ Cup road game in Panabo on Saturday.

Following this setback, the Hotshots now hold a record of 3-3, tying for third place in Group A with the NorthPort Batang Pier, while the TNT Tropang Giga (5-1) and the Meralco Bolts (5-1) lead the pack. As they prepare to clash with the Dyip, who are still searching for their first win after six attempts, the Hotshots are eager to turn things around.

Prior to the disappointment in Panabo, the Hotshots were on a promising streak, having won their last two games with original import Glenn Robinson III.

However, team management and coaching staff believe that bringing Muhammad into the fold, an NBA first-round draft choice with a proven track record in the local pro league with the NLEX Road Warriors and San Miguel Beermen, will significantly boost their chances of making a deep playoff run.

On the other hand, the Dyip’s immediate challenge lies in overcoming their struggles to secure that elusive first victory. Coach Johnedel Cardel and his team find themselves in a precarious position, urgently needing to start winning to secure a spot among the top four in Group A, which will compete against the top four from Group B in the crossover quarterfinals.
