Richard Hollis-Jefferson powers TNT past Magnolia
TNT rebounded from its gut-wrenching loss to Converge by edging past Magnolia, 88-82, on Thursday, reclaiming the top spot in Group A of the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Crucial three-pointers from import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Poy Erram in the closing moments proved pivotal as the Tropang Giga secured their third victory in four outings.
Hollis-Jefferson delivered an impressive performance, tallying 32 points, 19 rebounds, seven assists, and two steals, helping TNT regain their composure after a devastating setback against Converge, where they surrendered a game-winning shot to import Scotty Hopson.
That painful defeat stung, especially after the Tropang Giga had built a comfortable double-digit lead.
This time around, however, they faced a determined Magnolia squad that rallied back from a nine-point deficit entering the final quarter.
Magnolia slipped to 1-2, placing fifth in Group A, despite five players reaching double figures, led by import Glenn Robinson III’s 19 points.
A jumper by Ian Sangalang gave the Hotshots their last lead at 80-78 with 3:33 remaining, but Hollis-Jefferson responded with a critical three-pointer from the left flank, propelling the Tropang Giga ahead for good.
Jayson Castro followed with a layup, and Erram, returning from a concerning slip that nearly resulted in a sprain during the third quarter, added a three-pointer that stretched the lead to 86-80 with just 1:51 left on the clock.
After a series of empty possessions for Magnolia, Hollis-Jefferson intercepted Robinson’s pass near midcourt, racing down the court for an emphatic jam to seal the score at 88-80 with only 31 seconds remaining, ensuring TNT’s victory.
