TNT holds off Magnolia to strengthen grip on top spot
Exhausted yet determined in the final stretch of the game, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson summoned his last reserves of energy, racing across the court to thwart a potentially pivotal fastbreak layup by Zavier Lucero.
This defining play underscored the relentless spirit of TNT as they eked out a nail-biting 84-82 win against Magnolia in a gritty showdown at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium during the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup on a vibrant Tuesday evening, September 17.
Hollis-Jefferson was emblematic of perseverance and determination for the Tropang Giga, not only contributing a robust 29 points but also dominating defensively with an impressive tally of 25 rebounds. His all-around performance was pivotal in bolstering TNT’s position at the summit of Group A, enhancing their record to an enviable 7-1.
In a clash characterized by stringent defenses, TNT managed to outshine with a balanced offensive effort. RR Pogoy led the charge with 19 points, while Calvin Oftana added a critical 10 points. Seasoned players Kelly Williams and Jayson Castro were instrumental as well, each adding nine points, with Williams also snagging seven rebounds and pilfering three steals.
Although Magnolia initially struggled offensively, managing only 36 points in the first half, they found their rhythm in the third quarter, exploding for 28 points led by the dynamic Shabazz Muhammad, who scored 12 of his game-high 30 points during this surge.
Entering the final quarter trailing by four points at 64-60, TNT ramped up their defense, which allowed them to extend their lead to 82-75, largely thanks to pivotal plays from Hollis-Jefferson.
Despite their efforts to close the gap, Magnolia’s resilience shone through with Paul Lee and Jerrick Ahanmisi sinking crucial three-pointers towards the game’s end. However, a pair of clutch free throws from Castro ultimately sealed Magnolia’s fate.
Muhammad, avoiding the foul troubles that plagued his previous game, stayed effective throughout, amassing 17 rebounds and leading his team’s scoring efforts. Despite spirited performances from Lee and Ahanmisi, who each tallied 12 points, Magnolia dropped to a 4-4 record, now tied with Converge for the third and fourth spots in Group A.
