Import-less Hotshots fall to Bolts in Panabo

Chris Newsome finally found his shooting rhythm, leading the Meralco Bolts to a commanding 82-74 victory over the Magnolia Hotshots in a decisive sweep of their elimination matchup at the Panabo Multi-Purpose Tourism, Cultural, and Sports Center on Saturday, September 7.

Newsome’s resurgence, following a recent ankle injury, came at a crucial moment for the Bolts, who managed to hold off the Hotshots effectively, securing their fourth consecutive win. The last Philippine Cup Finals Most Valuable Player appeared revitalized, contributing an impressive 21 points and eight rebounds.

Meanwhile, import Allen Durham showcased his prowess with a double-double, tallying 15 points and 15 rebounds, which proved vital for Meralco’s undermanned frontline, missing key players Raymond Almazan, Cliff Hodge, and Norbert Torres.

Bong Quinto added further depth to the offense with 16 points, while Chris Banchero chipped in 10, as the Bolts solidified their grip on the top position in Group A with a commendable 5-1 record, even in the absence of wingers Aaron Black and Allein Maliksi.

Meralco established a commanding lead of 13 points during the game, fully capitalizing on Magnolia’s challenges as they faced the match without an import. The Hotshots’ anticipated replacement, Shabazz Muhammad, traveled with the team but still lacked the necessary FIBA clearance to play, leaving Magnolia to rely solely on their local talent.

Despite being shorthanded, the Hotshots kept the contest competitive, trailing by just four points as the game approached its final two minutes. However, crucial baskets from Durham, Quinto, and Newsome delivered the decisive blows, extending Meralco’s lead to a comfortable 80-70 in the closing moments.

Zav Lucero led Magnolia with a valiant effort, scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, while teammates Paul Lee and Mark Barroca contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The loss left the Hotshots at an even 3-3 in the standings.
