PBA indefinitely suspends 2021 Governors’ Cup

PBA fans will have to wait a little longer before witnessing their favorite teams back in action.

Willie Marcial, with the approval of the league’s Board of Governors during a special meeting on Wednesday, has decided to indefinitely suspend the ongoing 2021 Governors’ Cup until the country’s COVID-19 situation improves.

The league, which had earlier called off all games scheduled for this week, wants to help prevent the further spread of the virus which as of now is at an alarming rate.

“It’s always a painful decision to postpone PBA games. But at this time when the infection rate is rising, the risk of continuing with the game for our players, officials and staff far outweigh our financial loss,” said league chairman Ricky Vargas.

“The PBA will be back. Its just a temporary pause to allow healing. This way we can assure our fans the quality of games will be sustained,” added the TNT governor.

Aside from the games, scrimmages has also been put on hold even if the government has allowed such activities in areas under Alert Level 2.

Teams, however, can proceed with individual workouts but is limited to 7 participants – 4 players, one coach, one safety officer and one staff.

“Yung health and safety talaga ng lahat ang importante. Mahirap na, we can’t put the people under our care at risk, ganon din ‘yung mga makakasalamuha nila. Mabuti na yung nag-iingat,” stressed Marcial.
